Kachinas

It is told that Kachinas came into being from the belief that their ancestors came from the underworld of Mother Earth. The dolls were made for religious and educational purposes.  The Hopi Kachinas are the only true Kachinas and are usually made from the cottonwood root. They are very different from the Navajo Kachina. They are very delicately carved and the dolls are more costly.   Either one brings beautiful art to the home.

"The Kachina with man-like body and mask-type head symbolize any and everything in which man has an interest.  The art, the drama, the poetry, and the meaning of the Kachina flourishes in Hopi-land, Navajo land and other lands to this day".1
